Geography

Subject Leader: Miss J Spencer

'The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together'

President Barack Obama

Intent

Children at St Andrew’s Benn will know and understand how the world around them works and encourage them to be curious and respectful about it. They will understand and explore where they live through fieldwork and exploration, as well as how they fit into the wider world through research and questioning. We want children to develop an understanding of how their actions can affect their local environment as well as how they might influence the wider world.

Learning about the many cultures our world has to offer, and how they have changed over time, will help our children understand today’s world. During our lessons, children will have the opportunity to develop their geographical skills such as: map work, place knowledge and comparing locations throughout their time at St Andrew’s Benn. By teaching children about our world’s geography, we hope to inspire them to be inquisitive and respectful global citizens.

Implementation

All children will develop and widen their local knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, geographical skills and fieldwork. Across both key stages, children will experience geography through practical engaging tasks beyond the classroom by exploring our local area in different ways to develop their knowledge and understanding of their local area, Rugby. Through revisiting skills, our lessons help children build on their prior knowledge alongside introducing new skills and challenges. Children will also develop their sense of the wider world by studying and comparing countries such as Mexico, Greece and India as well as looking at the wider world and how we can take care of it.

  • Lenses: Action & consequence, change & continuity, significance, similarities and differences, spirituality

  • Threads: investigating places, investigating people, understanding natural processes

  • Concepts: In KS1, children will use maps and recognise both physical and human features to do with the local area, as well as using them to explore the world’s continents and oceans.

Impact

Curriculum for L.I.F.E

L – Love of Learning

We believe that our Geography lessons will instil a deep understanding, curiosity, and respect for the world we live in, helping children to become responsible global citizens.

I – Inspired

Children will be inspired to use geographical vocabulary accurately, understand the different strands of geography, and make meaningful links with other subjects such as history and science. For example, exploring how volcanoes shape the land or investigating rocks and soils in science.

F – Flourished

Through enquiry and exploration, children will flourish as they develop curiosity about the world around them, recognise the impact they have upon it, and build a positive commitment to caring for their local environment and the future of our planet.

E – Enriched

By engaging in meaningful geography learning, all children will be enriched with the confidence to speak clearly about their knowledge, skills, and understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
