Times Table Rockstars & NumBots
Learning our timetables is an important life skill but it can be tricky.
The teaching of times tables starts from the very beginning of school when we learn to count and is then built on through the school.
In Year 4, all children have to take part in a national times tables assessment online. This is to ensure they have the skills to support their maths work in Years 5, 6 and beyond.
As a school, we subscribe to TTRockstars which is a website/app where children can practise their times tables using a variety of games. The games help the children to learn their facts as well as their speed at recalling them.
Every child from Year 1 has a username and password (although it is not recommended for Year 1) and can access the site from different devices.
We recommend that they use the games for ten minutes three times a week as a minimum.
For Year 1 to Year 6 we also subscribe to Numbots which uses the same username and password. This allows the children to work on calculation skills from basic counting to addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers. As the children work through the levels they are able to access more calculation challenges. The games use models and images that we use in school.
NumBots is an exciting resource that our children have access to from Reception in the Summer Term through to Year 6. The tasks use pictorial representations and models that we use across the school including: part whole models, number lines, number grids.
It enables children to learn core maths skills they require by building their knowledge from the ground up – starting at the very beginning with subitising (counting without counting). Children progress through the skills with the aim being that they will be able to add and subtract 2 digit numbers using mental maths skills.
